Jargon Buster - S

SVHS
Super VHS is the high band, improved quality version of VHS.

SVHSC
Super VHS Compact is the camcorder equivalent of SVHS.

S-Video
(Or mini 8 pin din) a small round connector used for high band equipment such as SVHS and Hi 8, giving improved results by keeping the chrominance and luminance separate.

SACD
The update of standard CD. Super Audio Compact Disc gives improved results.

Scart
A 21 pin rectangular connector used for audio-visual applications and sometimes referred to as a euro connector.

Sleep Timer
Function that allows the unit to turn itself off after a set period of time. Usually applies to TV`s and Hifi`s.

Smart Card
Personal viewing card supplied and activated by the digital broadcaster that when inserted in to a decoder box or intergrated TV allows access to digital programming.

Subwoofer
Used for the reproduction of low sound frequencies, typically from 20Hz to 200Hz. Whether in the car or at home, the subwoofer is critical for filling out the "low end" of the audible spectrum, as well as ground pounding bass.
